How to get here

By car: Take the M275 into Portsmouth then turn left at Church Street Roundabout, following brown signs for Charles Dickens’ Birthplace. Turn left onto Wingfield Street and again onto Nelson Road. Turn left again onto Victoria Street. Old Commercial Road is at the very end. Alternatively, the Park & Ride service offers a quick and affordable way into the city, with a designated stop on route for the museum.

By train: The nearest railway station to the museum is Portsmouth and Southsea. From here it’s a 0.7 mile walk via Commercial Road.

By bus: The Charles Dickens’ Birthplace bus stop is operated by First on routes X4, 8, 20 and 700. It’s also a stop on the Park & Ride service.

Please note

Advance booking is required for all visits to the museum. If you’re looking to organise a group visit, take a look at the information here.

Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

As our collection is far larger than we have space for in the museum, we keep many items in our off-site store. This is so they can be properly indexed and maintained, to be put on display when needed. We run occasional tours of the museum store between April and September. Check the events page for details on any upcoming store tours.
